Tilt-Shift Videos

I've been wanting to post some great tilt-shift video for quite a while now. but can't seem to find a great collective website that actually put it up there. Well most of great quality videos are posted on Vimeo. Not just the tilt-shift video ok, other creative videos, shorts, 2D/3D animations, music videos, or just plain awesome cinematography. In the case of creative content it is much better than YouTube. For one it can project better result in both SD and HD. Second there are less junks there compare to YouTube.

Enough about Vimeo and lets carry on to the main topic. Now, the Wiki's explanation about Tilt-Shift is this;

"Tilt-shift photography" refers to the use of camera movements on small- and medium-format cameras, and sometimes specifically refers to the use of tilt for selective focus, often for simulating a miniature scene. Sometimes the term is used when the shallow depth of field is simulated with digital postprocessing; the name may derive from the tilt-shift lens normally required when the effect is produced optically.

To me, in the laymen's term is a photography technique that uses a special lens that would make the result to look like miniature models. Your subjects would actually, literally look like man made miniatures but they are actually real buildings, people, cars, ships or what have you.

The first time I knew about this was at work when my colleagues were actually talking about it and looking at videos on the net and looking at the lenses. I wanted to see what's going on but I was too busy with my work, then a few days later I went with my friends to see some mummy exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore and there were other exhibitions as well there (duh, of course). Part of those is, I believe it was photography contest about some theme about Singapore National Day. Then there they were, tilt-shift photos.
One photo I remember the most was the F1 race with a wide angle shot and the F1 car at the turning corner. I believe it was this one

Go to Boston.com for more of these F1 photos, awesome ones too. But this is the 2008 ones.

Well, as you can see it does look like a miniature toy right? It's just an eye illusion thing. Depth of Field, distances, angle manipulation, bla bla bla. What ever it is it looks freaking cool I would say. It's like when you can achieve this effects by yourself, you would feel that you have the world on the palm of your hand doesn't it?

I found a site that actually collects videos from Vimeo of, may be, the best tilt-shift effects time lapse. So they took the photos and put it in an editing software, put them together and become a video. I did read some where that you can actually achieve the same effect using a normal footage and treat it at post, apply some filters and blur here and there. But I would say nothing beats the real thing doesn't it?

So here they are from Photoble.com, 10 Astonishing Tilt-Shift Videos. Oh yea they always have great music accompanying the videos :-)

The Ant and The Fly

Luke is a worker ant that has a job of getting food outside the ant nest everyday. Every ant has to come back with at least a bite of food for the colony and for them. Luke is single and he wants and need a companion for his soul. It seems that no ant in the colony would ever recognize him at all. He is very quite and unpopular with the other fellow workers. The only friend he has is Boris, tall, handsome, hard working and worker of the month. He is everything Luke would want. He is popular among the girls. But every time Luke wants to get to know them, it seems that the girls’ only interest is Boris. Luke would get his company only during lunch time or between breaks. The topic that they would talk about is only about Boris and girls.

Some day Luke is out side looking for food. He climbs up this tall looking pole that looks like a wood-looking kind. He could smells the great aroma of different kind of food in the atmosphere and stream would come around him as if a cloud has passes by his face. He sprints as fast as he could to the smell source then he sees a massive object in front of him. It looks circular and the edge of the object slants outward from the bottom to top, as if it is a cliff that has a shine and very smooth surface. He climbs up the object and he sees a very huge pool of this thick and slimy liquid with various objects inside of it. After he stares at it for a while, he takes a sip of that liquid and it taste wonderful and very refreshing. But then he hears this buzzing sound from his back and something lands beside him. It was a fly, a lady fly with very delicate pair of wings and wonderful red shiny collections of eyes but she has a leg missing. Emma, the fly, stuck out her tongue and straight away slurping the soup away. She realizes that she has company besides her. They look at each other for a while and smiles. A big bang suddenly appears, as if it is a gigantic earthquake. It is the humans putting down the plates on the table. Emma falls into the pool of thick liquid and she is stuck, she couldn’t get out. Luke reaches for her and took her out of the liquid before she drowns to death. He quickly grabs her and drags her out of that tall place to the ground. He takes her to the nearest water fountain he knows and washes her off that thick and delicious liquid. They get to know each other well after. They play around in Luke’s favorite places and Emma takes him airborne. They do fun stuff together. It is as if they are interested and meant to be together.

Day by day passes, Luke goes out like his usual day to find food and see Emma. This time when he gets out of his nest he smells something. It is something terrible and suffocating him a little. He sees a little bit of shower above him. There is one drop of that liquid drops in his eye and it burns him until it hurts. The alarm for the emergency goes off. Every ant goes back to the nest; they run madly as if hell breaks loose, so does Luke. While he runs he keeps on thinking what would happen to Emma. Every ant stays inside the nest for the day. The next day Luke goes out for work again and he heard someone shouting, “BIG BUFFET!!!” Every ant runs wildly to that ant. What seems to be a big feast is a big pile of dead flies. Luke goes to the site and he is terrified, petrified and horrified. His first thought that crosses his mind looking at the site is Emma. He searches the pile for her. Someone shouted again that there is a fly without a leg. He rushes to that ant and push him out of the fly. It is she, Emma, the beautiful fly with a missing leg. His tears drop one by one. His only first and true love is beside him and died. The leader of the day says to bring the whole pile into the nest and leave nothing behind. Luke is torn. He has to serve his duty as an ant but his love is his colony’s food. He has no choice but carry his love to the nest.

The End

This was my very first synopsis I ever wrote for a script. I was inspired my Antz and A Bug's Life at that time. So the story is fairly similar to the animation features. Well I was Cleaning up my hard drives and I stumble upon this. It was a synopsis for a college assignment that is later turn to be a script. Well my script is at my old hard drive that would spin anymore so it's mostly gone I think. Unless there's someone out there that can recover it. So yea, that's it. I like the idea also on how compatible two different kinds could fit like a glove. How differences between the two and imperfections are actually meant to counter one and another and make them perfect. (Well if I ever recover that script it's more elaborate than this). Well that's the idea at that time for I can remember. Oh yea one thing I remember is that when I handed this up to the lecturer, she said that I was the only one in the whole group of 40 plus or something that is actually writing something different and her first time seeing an animation script in her class when others try to do the same topic year in and year out. I felt quite cool :-)

Wanna know the best lines in Hollywood?

Well I think these are not the best of the best. But it's close enough. I think I only saw like around half of all of these movies. May be because many of them are classics. Well it's not like I detests the classic, I mean gosh one of my favourite movies are The Maltese Falcon and Rear Window (which I believe are not in this compilation). It's just, only a few of them clicks with me you know. I can't really stand watching slow phase classics, makes me sleepy. Well the point is I watch what I feel like watching or what I like only. But "REDRUM", "Royal with Cheese", "Life was like a box of chocolates", "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse", "I'll be back", "FREEEDOOOM!!!" and many more are here. So enjoy, and try to guess which movie they're from. It's a fun to watch with others, the more the merrier. :-)

It always is

He always tell a good story no matter what song it is. This is my favorite so far from their new album :-) It's always funny the way it is.

Dave Matthews Band - Funny the Way it is

Lying in the park on a beautiful day
Sunshine in the grass, and the children play
Siren’s passing, fire engine red
Someone’s house is burning down on a day like this

The evening comes and we’re hanging out
On the front step and a car rolls by with the windows rolled down
And that war song is playing, “why can’t we be friends?”
Someone is screaming and crying in the apartment upstairs

Funny the way it is, if you think about it
Somebody’s going hungry and someone else is eating out
Funny the way it is, not right or wrong
Somebody’s heart is broken and it becomes your favorite song

The way your mouth feels in your lovers kiss
Like a pretty bird on a breeze or water to a fish
A bomb blast brings a building crashing to the floor
You hear the laughter while the children play war

Funny the way it is, if you think about it
One kid walks 10 miles to school, another’s dropping out
Funny the way it is, not right or wrong
On a soldier’s last breath his baby’s being born

Standing on a bridge, watch the water passing under me
It must’ve been much harder when there was no bridge just water
Now the world is small, remember how it used to be
With mountains and oceans and winters and rivers and stars

Watch the sky, the jet planes, so far out of my reach
Is there someone up there looking down on me?
Boy chase a bird, so close but every time
He’ll never catch her, but he can’t stop trying

Funny the way it is, if you think about it
One kid walks 10 miles to school, another’s dropping out
Funny the way it is, not right or wrong
On a soldier’s last breath his baby’s being born
Funny the way it is, not right or wrong
Somebody’s broken heart becomes your favorite song
Funny the way it is, if you think about it
A kid walks 10 miles to school, another’s dropping out

Standing on a bridge, watch the water passing under me
It must’ve been much harder when there was no bridge just water
Now the world is small, remember how it used to be
With mountains and oceans and winters and rivers and stars
